Heart Beat Props
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:59:16 PM »
With acknowledgement first and foremost to our Families and Friends, I was thinking that with people passing, why wait to give them props?  As The Digital Underground (Title of the thread) song said, "Just give props to a person simply because they are living."

First up in the musical thread is an artist I would like to see on TV One's Unsung series.

Leroy Burgess - The man has been behind and in front of some of the most infectious dance grooves. From time spent in the group Black Ivory, Aleem featuring Leroy Burgess and Convertion (Amongst many others)

Check this cut - Let's Do It -

It's so layered and energetic...Chorus say's "Don't ya like it?"  Indeed I do.  Post whoever.  Not a criticism thread at all. Just props to whoever you "feel" musically.

I shared this Heart Beat Props notion with a friend of mine who is the founder of the National Arts Treasure Initiative. He's trying to give jazz and blues legends recognition while they're still alive to appreciate it -- heart beat props. He was glad to have the name for the concept.  ;)

In that vein, heart beat props to Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Jon Hendricks, and Wayne Shorter.

Good to hear, Curtis!  I have to tip the hat to Digital Underground.

Speaking of Digital Underground and heartbeat props -

George Clinton was a major influence to them, so drum roll for the King Of Funk!

I remember seeing Parliament and Funkadelic perform around the mid 90's.  Concert started at 8:30-9-ish, we actually left around 3am
Unbelievable energy!

BTW - Great choices guys!

The Architect of Rock and Roll!

And great call on Chuck Berry. I forget he's still alive.

It was only when I went back to look at the first post in this thread that I realized you didn't call out George Clinton from jump. So while we're here, let's not forget Bootsy, Bernie Worrell, Michael Hampton, Maceo Parker, and Fred Wesley. Heart Beat Props for the P-Funk!

Okay, I mentioned Al Green, then a group of great ladies who sing soul.  But who are the other great male singers still here?

The Ojays!

Smokey Robinson.

Bobby Womack.

The Manhattans.

Who else am I forgetting?
