the best running backs in NFL history?
« on: July 31, 2006, 01:29:50 pm »
ok folks here it is give me your top 5 running backs in nfl history. mine are:

emmit smith: durability, the yards, the rings and he dominated for 4 or 5 years.

walter payton: the greatest untill emmit came along. did not do one thing the best but did it all great. plus the best leader of the buch

barry sanders: if he would have kept going may have had the record. and wow what a great runner. he is the only back who could make a two yard gain breath taking.

roger craig: one of my personal favorites i know he looks out of place and may not make the hall of fame but had the rings, the attitude with the high knee style with the bug eyes, the leadership and was the first to have 2k rushing and receiving in the same season.

jim brown: the only on my list i did not see play in my time. but when i look at his ypc and the fact that he retired so young that is enough for me. he is probably one of the few backs from that era that would be an equal powerhouse today
so whos yours?

i respect bettis's game. and the fact he came on strong later in his carrer is something else to. he has some of the best feet out of any running back ever. not at his size just best period. my boy warric dunn has the biggest heart. i laugh when people call him small though. the brother's thighs are like tree trunks yo even for his size.

Payton's #1  R.I.P.  :'(

E.Smith
Gale Sayers (his highlight reels are crazy!)
Barry Sanders
Marshall Faulk

I also like cats like:
Marcus Allen (may not have the numbers, but my man was graceful)
Tony Dorsett

marcus allen had two wonderful carrers. pre and post raiders. he was speed and grace with the raiders and became power and smarts with the chiefs. he maximized the most out of his skills and knowledge then any running back in the nfl. i respect marshal faulks carrer and what he did in that ram's offense is amazing but so much of it was smoke and mirrors. in indy in a conventional offense he did good but not great. imagine barry sanders on that cowboys team or that st lois team. wow. :o

Alexander...the flat footed, fumble guy outta Seattle? He'll do big numbers based on the amount of carries he gets per game, IMO, but he's lacking something essential to be one of the GREATS (sorry Toya, don't reign down on me too hard, girl)

Portis...? Big-ass neck on that dude -- Damn!

Tomlinson -- can't take anything away from him -- He's got the goods he could just use a better line.

Now, Blue "smoke and mirrors?" That's kinda harsh, my man. No, MF is no Barry Sanders and yes, if BS had a great line/offense to run with like MF it woulda been something to see but by the time MF got from under the Rams protection he wasn't exactly a spring chicken anymore just like when ES went to the Cardinals -- they were aged meat and not really expected to shine like they did at one time. Now Marcus is somewhat of an anomally, doing what you stated having two great careers. Man, I used to live for Sundays just to see him do his thing.

what i meant by that when a defense had to account for azhakim, bruce and holt then sometimes a fourth receiver or a tight end my man you would have gottenn a thousand yards with that set up. they were stacked. mashal had talent a ton of it. but that offense put him over the top from having a great carrer to having a hall of fame carreer.

Yes, definitely stacked -- to the hilt. And IMO Kurt Warner played a bigger role then most will give him credit for.

It's true they were a great offense, but MF was a huge part of it.  Because of him, defenses had to respect the run.  Also, he is a great receiver himself.

that is true and the last thing i want to do is take away from marshal but in the top 5 cant see it. running back is fun because if you change it to the top 10 for one season we could argue for hours. then backs like earl cambel and jamal anderson and cristian okoya the nigerian nightmare :)

Top 5 is almost an impossible task, you ask me. Do you go solely on numbers? Do style, and grace, poetry in motion factor in anywhere? I like the run game much more so than the passing so I respect all the greats -- my list is mainly compromised of those I... like most I suppose?
