that is true and the last thing i want to do is take away from marshal but in the top 5 cant see it. running back is fun because if you change it to the top 10 for one season we could argue for hours. then backs like earl cambel and jamal anderson and cristian okoya the nigerian nightmare :)
True re: Faulk not in the top 5.  If you're going for single seasons, how about Terrell Davis?

My all time top 5:
Jim Brown
Walter Payton
OJ Simpson
Barry Sanders
Eric Dickerson

Toughest cut:  Gale Sayers

Add:

Alexander.

Add:

Portis

So far,

Tomlinson, Alexander, Portis.

Alexander...the flat footed, fumble guy outta Seattle? He'll do big numbers based on the amount of carries he gets per game, IMO, but he's lacking something essential to be one of the GREATS (sorry Toya, don't reign down on me too hard, girl)

I feel you, my best friend "pursuaded" me that he is a "great". I never had evidence to back me up. Until now.

Portis...? Big-ass neck on that dude -- Damn!

You know what they say about men with big necks...Damn!

Quote
Tomlinson -- can't take anything away from him -- He's got the goods he could just use a better line.

Very well rounded running back. He cuts through defense with such grace and precision. Can't hate.

Same as mine except you swapped Dickerson for Smith.  I can respect that.  Emmitt had skills; I just hate the Cowboys.   :P

Notice how everyone puts O.J. last or, in the case of Mr. Metcalf,
sticks him somewhere in the middle.  LOL!

The only other place to put him is first.  He's neither the best nor the first.  I don't think I get your point.  What makes you laugh?

eric dickerson was one of the most frustrating. how can someone run on their tippy toes and get all of those yards. i swear the brother was scared of getting hit with all of that armor on. i think i never saw him break a tackle.

Yeah, I knew somebody would bring that up.  Seems to me that it was later in his career after he got hurt that he was tipping like that.  I kind of remember him running harder when he came in the league.  He sure hit a hole quick then.  As for the pads, I ain't mad at the brother.  Football is a violent-ass sport and running back is pretty much suicidal.  All that said, he is definitely the on-the-bubble guy on my list.

Payton was the Best.
Pay-Day!!

Does anyone remember the old 8-bit NES TECMO BOWL where Payton was the Bears RB?  I used to play the s@@t outta that game.  And don't let Pay-Day turn the corner on you... see ya! 6 points every time -- no one was catching him... not L.T., not Dex Manley, not Mike Singletary, not Ronnie Lott -- No-Bod-Dee!

I would explain but then this topic would turn into a discussion about O.J. Simpson
and I'd rather forego that.

Well, it certainly takes an act of will to separate OJ the football great from Orenthal the homicidal wife-beater.  Perhaps that struggle is what you were perceiving.   ;)
