SCANDAL (THE new show you MUST watch)
« on: April 06, 2012, 09:11:16 AM »
What up HEF?
Shonda Rhimes has done it again.  I love how she creates shows that are now only well written, acted and directed, but they always have a Black character in a HIGH or lead position while being inviting to white people.
SCANDAL is a great show and Kerry Washington is awesome in this role. It's good to see Columbus Short doing his thing on the small screen as well.
  Did you watch it?
I think "Thursday on ABC" is Shonda Rhimes' middle name. lol.

Olivia Pope (K. Washington) and her associates are lawyers who do damage control for high profile clients. No courtrooms...they deal with the court of public opinion.

If you haven't seen it, then go to abc.com OR hulu.com and watch it asap! Once you do, then come back here and let's discuss it.

Olivia Pope is a great character. As good at her job as she is, she is morally flawed and that makes her even more interesting. I don't want to spoil anything.

The President is...a bit of a cad in this show. I see why she used a white President cuz President Obama would be catchin' hella flack right now. hahahha. You know it's true.

Yep!
I already found 3 reasons to hit record on the DVR:

1. Shonda Rhimes (show's creator)
2. Kerry Washington (my baby muvvah)
3. Columbus Short (the other brotha from the movie, "The Losers")

Now, all I have to do is make time to watch it! ;D  I'll post my initial impressions on the show once a few more people online start stacking this thread with comments.

I have it DVRed but haven't watched it yet.  I know this is a Shonda Rhimes show so I have a question: Is this a Grey's Anatomy type of show with the same goofy plots and characters? I liked the the first two seasons, but then couldn't take it any more.

I have it DVR'd as well but haven't seen the whole thing.  As far as I can tell, SCANDAL is something completely different.  I DID peek a few minutes of the intro and thought that scene where Ms. Washington's character rambled her lines on a little too long for my taste for the scene to be believable... I'm hoping the show isn't too far fetched because I like the look and feel of it.   SCANDAL gives me the impression of a small group of ex-Washington agents and insiders working together doing freelance work or jobs that no one else can do or won't do.  For some reason, the show reminds me of HOUSE OF LIES.
I dunno... :-\   I'm gonna sit up with the whole episode tonight to see for certain.

I DVR'd it. It wasn't too bad. Sometimes the way Kerry Washington talks, pronounces words, irks me, but I thought she did a pretty good job and she has created a complex character with a lot of potential. I liked that she's a bully at times. Also the shows set up could also have a lot of potential. It's sort of like a lawyer show, but not, so I think it could go in all types of directions. Columbus Short was also good. The rest of the cast wasn't bad either. I didn't care for the guy playing the president. He doesn't seem all that presidential to me.

I sort of figured out the big twist beforehand though Washington pulled off those scenes well. I will give it another chance.

Ah! :D finally got a chance to see the entire first episode entitled, "Sweet Baby".

Things I liked about SCANDAL:
I like the premise because just like EmperorJones said, the show can go in almost any direction; It can be a crime drama. It can be a murder/mystery. It can a political thriller, etc.  I like Olivia Pope but she almost seem invincible yet she's this little woman having people quake in their shoes just because she 'knows'  personal information about them. Behind partitions the way Kerry Washington played her, she's an emotional wreck.  I hope no one ever sees that vulnerable side of hers because everyone around her whisper her name as if she was a god or something. Does she even possess a weapon to protect herself?
Columbus Short's character is a total mystery to me. He seems like the muscle of the group because of his stocky build and presence, however, he's not as confrontational as Pope or the other three characters in the group.
The female recruit the group just hired is gonna take some time for me to get used to because sometimes I feel just like her,  "Why da hell was she selected into the group?' :-\

Things I didn't like about SCANDAL
My only gripe is that the production looks the same as "Grey's Anatomy"; The cinematography in SCANDAL looks as if it was shot 10+ years ago for a new television show in 2012.  I'm talking about soft studio, rim lighting combined with a few gratuitous 'shaky cam' scenes makes the show look dated and generic.  Kerry Washington is a pretty actress who stars in movies, why can't the show have a higher resolution camera?  ...and brighter hues??  Sharpness and colors like what you would see in "The Losers" or even "Jumping The Broom".

Overall, the show has potential. I thought casting the U.S. president (and first lady) as  white  was strange but as the plot began to stir, I can see why that decision was made. I don't think the current real-world U.S. president would appreciate anything the TV show SCANDAL proposes or implies in thier character relationships. :-[

I'm waiting to see what the next episode may bring.

I see what you're saying about the casting of a white President. But at the same time this could've been an opportunity for the show to cast an Asian, Latino, or other non-white President.

Kerry Washington's Pope did get on my nerves a little in terms of being so in the know and everyone loved/feared her, however her emotional breakdown at the end helps add dimension to the character. She's not going to be a Mary Sue.

I also question why the young white girl is a part of the team. I can see what the show is probably aiming for, with her being the heart, the moral compass of the show, and the gateway person to take the audience into Pope's world, but the character doesn't seem to possess any special knowledge or gifts that would make Pope want to hire her. And she didn't have any special insights or deductions that would show that she's really a genius or something, at least in the pilot. Maybe she has some deep dark secret, she's not all sugar and spice, or wild eyed innocent as she came across in the pilot.

As for Columbus Short I don't see him as muscle necessarily, but more like a rock, a steady, supportive presence for everyone else. He came across like an NBA sixth man. I don't see him becoming confrontational because black men who are confrontational-unless it is in the defense of a white person-isn't going to play. I can see him being the reliable, perhaps light-hearted, mentor, but not someone knocking a lot of heads. Pope and the British (?) guy will be doing a lot of that, IMO.

I know, right? :-\
One would think that if  "...the rules have changed."  as Olivia Pope proclaimed to her client, then why not make that possible as in your example?

Yup.
Well, we now know that she's not as tough as the other two women  with her sobbing in the bathroom stall, remorseful over how Pope does what she do, worried that she would never measure up to her boss.

What I do see is a possible romance with the guy on the team who does the paralegal stuff who was consoling her.

I enjoyed it as well. I probably won't follow it because I don't watch a lot of TV. Unless I get to see Kerry Washington in lingerie...a lot.  ;D

Damn... :-\

Whatever happened to TV characters that had thier own personal 'cool whips'?

Starsky & Hutch had thier Gran Torino. Baretta had his Chevy.  Jim Rockford had his Pontiac Firebird, so did Micheal Knight.  Mary Tyler Moore had her Ford Mustang.
Even Herman the monster had a hotrod!!!

Olivia Pope doesn't drive???
