GEEK RACISM - my latest blog entry
« on: May 21, 2012, 03:06:17 pm »
Hey folks, if you get a chance, check out my latest blog entry.

It's in response to the racist white geek/straight white male controversy going on in the geeksphere. All the background info in is in a link within the blog.

KEY QUOTE:
Quote

Some White sci-fi/fantasy fans look upon sci-fi and fantasy as a "refuge" from a constantly "browning" pop culture that automatically (in their minds) alienates and confuses them. These all white fantasy worlds are their only respite from the (imagined) Black hordes of pop culture and the moment they hear that their pristine genre worlds are going to be "touched" by Blackness, they lose their minds because they feel that we are "taking" something else from them. I call it the NASCAR/NHL effect. Hardcore white fans of both tend to react negatively to increased participation from Blacks and Latinos.

Love to discuss with folks here.

O.K...

Let's discuss it.  Let me start off with a question:

How can one make a complaint about  geek racism towards blacks only when it affects you personally then eventually turn around and dismiss a black person who has a similar experience?

A lot of us say stuff like we "want to see more Blacks in this or that" but we have got to be the ones creating that stuff ourselves. Period.

With the reduced costs of shooting on digital video or even doing your own digital comics, we should be creating the stuff we want to see. While not everyone is a creator - nor should be - there's enough of us to create new material that represents the world we see daily.

Agreed. It's happening, as you well know. Good stuff IS coming, borne out of frustration.
BTW, great article. Reminded me of a time in college, when a fellow (caucasian female) art major asked me why is it that I only draw Black characters. The truth of the matter was that my portfolio of characters/figures was the most diverse in the program, but all she saw, was "Black" people. If she would have thought for more than a half second, maybe she wouldn't have asked a Black/Mixed/WHATEVER guy born in a predominately Black city such a question. This type of "Unconscious Racism" by many has really reared it's ugly head exponentially since the late 1990's. Many "fanboys" donít hate actually black people, donít think black people deserve to be treated badly. But they do believe, waaayyyy back in the recesses of their mind, that certain things, places and people are designated for whites only. I ended up telling her "the world does not need Kris Mosby to create another White Superhero, that's what Marvel and DC are here for". ;)

Yeah. Too often "too black" means more than none.
"Seek first to understand, then to be understood."
"Be hard on systems, but soft on people."
