BO BUN BRASS BAND and M.Petrucciani – FunkenTelechy

I’ve long thought funk…particularly P.Funk…lent itself to stretched out jazz renditions. Thanks to a lucky encounter with Shock G from Digital Underground at the Vancouver airport, I can share this link he sent me of just what I’ve been hankering to hear. Funkentelechy is a perfect track for such treatment. The video isn’t much to look at but the music is divine.

While looking for the previous clip, I found this version, which is also quite dope. Since FUNKENTELECHY can be heard back to back even at a long running time, here it is again:

Hall & Oates at the Hollywood Bowl

Independence Day Weekend

Fireworks at the Hollywood Bowl

This year, the kids saw their first fireworks show (we are infamous among many of our parents for putting our kids to bed when it’s still light out. But this year we figured they were old enough to take to the Hollywood Bowl for their Independence Day weekend show. Hall & Oates were the headliners, and maaaaan, they got HITS! From “Sara Smile” to “Private Eyes” we were rocking from start to finish.

I didn’t know the conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra was a black man, but man that made all the sweeter as I discussed his job with the kids. No need to make it an explicit racial conversation…him standing there is all it takes.

PSYCH in Vancouver

Vancouver, BC, Canada

I was back in Vancouver to direct another episode of PSYCH, a very cool show on the USA Network. The cast and crew are great, and even though the show is set in Santa Barbera, they shoot it in Vancouver Canada.

Here are several of the stars of the show…James Roday, Dule Hill, Tim and Maggie. I was shooting a scene where they were all looking at a computer screen with that the young lady playing a detective was operating, so I snapped a shot.

Saladin Patterson, Psych writer

This episode was written by co-executive producer Saladin Patterson, a great guy and a wonderful writer. He’s an MIT grad who written on FRASIER, THE BERNIE MAC SHOW (where we met) and the PSYCH episode I did last season that guest-starred Chi McBride.

Cast of PSYCH

After that successful episode, the fine folks at PSYCH re-upped with another extra black episode. In addition to me, Saladin and co-star Dule, we also had guest stars Anthony Anderson and Stoney Jackson Jr!

The episode is so blackadelic that Dule had to tweet about it!

Back to Vancouver itself. Last year I enjoyed my time there so much, I encouraged the family to come up this time. And they had a great week. Vancouver is a very family-friendly city with plenty of great activities for kids. I guess not supporting a war machine and actually liking people means there’s plenty of money for nice community centers and parks. And national health care.

Stanley Park statue

While most of the Afro Canadians are in Toronto, there is this very cool sculpture in Stanley Park in British Columbia. It’s the same statue at the top of this post.

I stopped the car when I saw it. I had to confirm that he was, indeed a black man. Here’s all I know about him:

Statue plaque: Harry Winston Jerome

Very cool. I hope Jesse Owens has a statue that cool somewhere in America.

San Diego Comic-Con

It’s that time of year. I thought I wasn’t going to go this year, but turns out I have business to attend to, so I will be at SDCC, and speaking on the Black Panel again.

This year will be the reunion of the original Milestone creators in a tribute to Dwayne McDuffie.

San Diego Comic-Con 2011 Black Panel

I hope to see you all on Friday, in room 5AB from 10am to 11:30am.

If you’ve never been to a comic book convention, or a large one, this video really explains it. It’s about a popular one in Atlanta, but the visuals and social dynamics apply nationwide.
