Hall & Oates at the Hollywood Bowl

Independence Day Weekend

Fireworks at the Hollywood Bowl

This year, the kids saw their first fireworks show (we are infamous among many of our parents for putting our kids to bed when it’s still light out. But this year we figured they were old enough to take to the Hollywood Bowl for their Independence Day weekend show. Hall & Oates were the headliners, and maaaaan, they got HITS! From “Sara Smile” to “Private Eyes” we were rocking from start to finish.

I didn’t know the conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra was a black man, but man that made all the sweeter as I discussed his job with the kids. No need to make it an explicit racial conversation…him standing there is all it takes.

Bootsy Baby Bobba!

The Grammy Museum is one of the best kept secrets in LA. They do some of the best concerts in town in their 300 seat Clive Davis theatre in the LA Live complex. It’s an hour of interview and questions and answers with a guest, then an hour of their new music, or whatever they want to play. I’ve seen Cassandra Wilson there, Raphael Saadiq, and now one of founding fathers of funk Bootsy Collins.

The interview itself was mesmerizing. Bootsy is a terrific storyteller and very honest and inspiring about his early days. I didn’t get any shots of him…too far back for iphone stills with no zoom lens, afterward I got close ups of his famous space bass.

Since I was near the sound board, I also shot the set list:
