black_movie_soundtrack

Special screenings of “Purple Rain” and “King of Jazz,” plus the return of The Black Movie Soundtrack at the Hollywood Bowl

The Academy will highlight the art of film music with three programs in August: the West Coast restoration premiere of “King of Jazz,” a tribute screening of “Purple Rain” with members of the cast and crew, and a live concert celebration of The Black Movie Soundtrack, featuring Oscar®-winning recording artist Common and guests. The events will take place at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills and at the Hollywood Bowl.

The schedule is as follows:

KING OF JAZZ (1930) – West Coast restoration premiere

Wednesday, August 17 – 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater

Hosted by Academy governor and Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino and animation director David Silverman.

Restored to its original length and two-color Technicolor glory, “King of Jazz” is a revue with songs, sketches and production numbers built around American bandleader, composer and orchestral director Paul Whiteman. Earning an Oscar for Art Direction, it was filmed entirely in early two-color Technicolor, and features the first-ever Technicolor animation by Walter Lantz.

PURPLE RAIN (1984) – Brand new 35mm optical stereo print

Monday, August 29 – 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater

With director Albert Magnoli, actor Jerome Benton, producer Robert Cavallo, and costume designer Marie France, and moderated by Academy governor Reginald Hudlin.

The Academy celebrates the life and legacy of Prince with a screening of “Purple Rain” in 35mm. “Purple Rain” grossed almost $70 million at the box office, sold over 20 million copies of the soundtrack, won an Oscar for Original Song Score and helped turn Prince into the sensation he remains today.

THE BLACK MOVIE SOUNDTRACK II – Co-presented with the Hollywood Bowl

Wednesday, August 31 – 8 p.m. at the Hollywood Bowl

Hosted by Craig Robinson, with performances by Marcus Miller, Common, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, and Ralph Johnson of Earth Wind and Fire, Full Force, Alice Smith and Charlie Wilson.

Grammy® winner Marcus Miller and this past year’s Oscar telecast producer Reginald Hudlin reprise the Bowl’s 2014 Black Movie Soundtrack event with new clips and some funky favorites. Actor and comedian Craig Robinson will host this soulful celebration of black cinema classics, featuring live performances by a slate of music stars.

SDCC: DC Comics’ Milestone Update: “Still Moving Forward”

I just want to add a side note to this article. I have not been the cause of the delay of the return of Milestone. While producing the Oscars, The NAACP Image Awards, directing a TV commercial, 10 television episodes and a feature film, I have also written over 150 comic book pages. So hopefully you’ll see them soon.

A year ago at Comic-Con International in San Diego, DC Comics announced plans for a revival of Milestone characters such as Static Shock and Icon, who represented a major push towards increase diversity in the 1990s. It’s been a quiet year on that front since, with virtually no updates in the interim — but the company confirmed Thursday morning at this year’s Comic-Con that the plan is still in motion.

“We’re still talking with Reggie [Hudlin],” DC Co-Publisher Jim Lee told CBR News at a press event, citing the busy schedule of Hudlin — in a leadership position of the new Milestone — as part of what’s affected the revival’s progress. “First off, he was a producer on the Academy Awards, he’s directing a movie based on a former Supreme Court member [Thurgood Marshall]. He just finished that up. We talk like once a week or so. It’s still moving forward, albeit at a slightly slower pace.”

Christopher Priest, the writer of DC’s current “Deathstroke” series and a part of Milestone in its original development (but left the company before its launch), announced at the press session that he’s having a Milestone-related meeting with DC on Saturday.

Last year, DC Comics announced that Milestone’s “Dakota” universe would become “Earth-M,” with up to two graphic novels published annually in that world, along with miniseries and one-shots. Hudlin and original Milestone co-founder Denys Cowan were announced as creative talent, along with Lee and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, although no further details were announced. Static Shock, Icon, Rocket, Hardware and Xombi were specifically disclosed as Milestone characters planned to return, along with new ones set to debut.

Milestone’s comics debuted in the 1990s as part of a unique publishing partnership with DC — Milestone was a separate company, but its comics were published and distributed by DC, who shared the profits while Milestone retained creative control. Though the Milestone characters were originally depicted as existing in their own separate fictional universe, a latter revival starting in 2008 saw them integrated into mainstream DC continuity. It’s not yet clear if the new material will interact with DC’s mainline titles.

Milestone Media was founded in 1993 by Denys Cowan, Derek T. Dingle, Michael Davis and the late Dwayne McDuffie, with the goal of promoting diversity in the comics industry through both its characters and behind-the-scenes talent, along with an emphasis on social issues. In early 2015, Hudlin, Cowan and Dingle separately announced the return of Milestone — with no DC affiliation confirmed — under the unofficial moniker “Milestone 2.0.”

Watch Josh Gad, Chadwick Boseman, Sterling K. Brown Belt Out Boyz II Men on Set (Video)

MOVIES | By Tony Maglio on July 1, 2016 @ 7:11 am

It’s even cooler when you think of this as Olaf, Black Panther and Chris Darden on the haromnies

“Motown Philly” is back again, indeed.

Actors Josh Gad, Chadwick Boseman and Sterling K. Brown covered the Boyz II Men hit from the set of their new film, “Marshall.” The guys were still in costume, which certainly adds something to the performance.

If the suits and harmonies aren’t enough for you, just close your eyes and picture Olaf, Black Panther and Chris Darden doing the chorus and bridge.

Watch the video above.

“Marshall” follows the early days of Thurgood Marshall (Boseman), the first African-American justice appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Gad co-stars as Marshall’s newbie law partner, Samuel Friedman. Brown portrays the man they’re both defending, Joseph Spell.
