The Apollo celebrates 30 Years of House Party in an evening featuring performances, conversations and highlights from the musical and comedy cult classics House Party (1990) and House Party 2 (1991). These iconic films were among the first films to center the Black teenage experience for a mainstream audience.
30 Years of House Party will feature performances by Kid N’Play, hip-hop group Full Force, Lisa Lisa, and DJ Wiz and appearances by some of the film’s key players including A.J. Johnson; Darryl “Chill” Mitchell; writer and director Reginald Hudlin; and other special guests. This ultimate 90s throwback is a celebration of a pivotal moment in Black cinema and hip-hop history.
Created and produced by Cali Green, the Screen/Play series celebrates “throwback” films and their soundtracks.

Warrington Hudlin, Sr. was born in Hot Springs Arkansas in 1933, became a celebrated Lindy Hopper in the Roxy in New York City and was the table tennis champion of New York. He served in World War Two, was a journalist, and was one of the first Black graduates of St. Louis University.
He founded Hudlin and Co. Insurance Agency in East St. Louis. He also built the home he raised his family in and founded State Community College, among other civic causes where he took a leadership role. He died in 1988.

In honor of Black History Month, the City of East St. Louis would like to celebrate the success of East St. Louis Champions.
Reginald Hudlin is a pioneer of the modern Black Film Movement.
Hudlin grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois, Reginald is a 30-year veteran of film and television.
Hudlin has written, directed and/or produced numerous popular feature films including House Party (1990), Boomerang (1992) and Bebe’s Kids (1992). Hudlin was also an executive producer of The Boondocks. He wrote the first 38 issues of volume 4 of “Black Panther” and made the Panther “unapologetically black.” He also created T’Challa’s sister, Princess Shuri, and sculpted her into a strong African warrior who brought feminism to the series. Along with the original founding members, Hudlin revived the beloved comic book company Milestone Media.
As Black Entertainment Television’s first president of entertainment (2005-2009), Hudlin shepherded some of the networks’s biggest hits, including Sunday best, BET Honors and The BET Hip Hop Awards. He also built BET’s profitable home entertainment division and revamped the network’s news division, which went onto win more than a dozen awards during that period. #bhm #ESL #estl #Black History Month
A-Rod is leading a $500 million SPAC into the sports business.
A-Rod is swinging for the fences. Alex Rodriguez has filed for a $500 million IPO through a special purpose acquisition company named Slam Corp. The retired baseball great is CEO of the SPAC, which intends “to focus on businesses in the sports, media, entertainment, health and wellness and consumer technology sectors, however, we do not intend to target professional sports franchises,” according to the prospectus filed this afternoon with the Securities & Exchange Commission.
Joining Rodriguez in the venture are eight other executives, including Kelly Laferriere, a sports and media executive who has worked with A-Rod Corp., and at ESPN; Jagdeep Singh, the founder of QuantumScape, a high-profile publicly traded battery maker; Himanshu Gulati, the founder of Antara Capital and other of his executives. Reggie Hudlin, who has written the Black Panther comic and been involved as a writer, director and producer in numerous Hollywood projects, including Django Unchained, is among the directors. Marc Lore, former CEO of Walmart is a special advisor to the SPAC.
A-Rod, along with partner J-Lo, Jennifer Lopez, recently saw an investment in Hims & Hers Inc., pay off when a SPAC brought that business public. SPACs are blank check companies that raise money in an IPO with the intention of then acquiring an operating business. A-Rod’s effort is another of more than four dozen sports-related SPACs to enter the marketplace since DraftKings went public by SPAC last spring.
Slam will sell units for $10 each, consisting of one share and one-fourth of a warrant to buy an additional share at $11.50. Goldman Sachs and BTIG are the bookrunners, the banks that will market the offering to Wall Street.
